Though not a frequent decision made by families, donation of one’s body for medical study and education is sometimes a viable option.
Michigan has a number of medical colleges, many of whom do accept this generous gift of the deceased and their family. We recommend discussing your plans with these institutions in advance or “preregistering” your wishes. The final decision about the acceptance of this gift is always made by the college at the time of death.
In these cases, services may still be held, with some special considerations as dictated by the college. Regardless, transportation must be arranged for and provided to the college by the funeral home. Medical colleges generally do not pay for the required services of the funeral home or for transportation. We have experience working with most medical colleges and we will be pleased to assist you.
