William P. Spurling

William Patrick Spurling Jr. (Bill) of Flint and Lewiston, MI passed away January 10, 2025, in Gaylord, MI at the age of 80.

Bill grew up in Flint and attended St. Michaels Catholic School as a boy and General Motors Institute (GMI) as a young man. He enjoyed meeting, speaking with and serving people. As a boy, you could find him slinging hot dogs, popcorn, and pops as a concessionaire at Atwood Stadium on Friday nights and Saturday afternoons. As an adult, his side hustle was operating Spurling’s Tax Service every January through mid-April for over 25 years.

Bill worked for General Motors’ AC Spark Plug division as a skilled trades millwright for over 30 years. He was a proud member of the United Auto Workers (UAW) union local 651. He was an avid participant in both the Industrial Mutual Association (IMA) softball and golf leagues, and a long-standing member of the Flint Elks Golf Club. He loved auto and drag racing and would think nothing of driving half a day to attend a race.

Bill is preceded in death by his father William Sr., mother Helen, and sister Sharon. He is survived by his wife of 61 years Marylou, brother Michael, sister Patricia, son Robert (Connie), daughter Michelle Vaden (Rick), grandchildren Caleb (Venessa) Ramage, Alyssa (Sean) Rainey, Chelsea (Tyler) Tarbutton, and great grandchildren Sterling and Hayes Ramage.

Bill’s final wishes were to be cremated without funeral services. His family is being assisted in honoring these wishes by Gaylord Community Funeral Home & Cremation Service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Alzheimer's Association (www.alz.org).
