Sophia Kwapis Maschke, 91 of Gaylord, passed away Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at Aspen Ridge Retirement Village.
Born on May 11, 1923 in Cedar, Sophia was the daughter of Peter and Julia (Schopieroy) Osga.
Sophia graduated from Traverse City Central in 1941. She lived on the family farm in Elmira when she met Edward Kwapis. They married in 1942. While he was serving in the military during World War II, Sophia worked in Detroit at Bunding Tubing. Later they returned to Gaylord where she worked at Gaylord Bakery and later at Royal Linen. Edward preceded her in death in 1968. In 1971, Sophia married Irwin Maschke. He preceded her in death in1987. In retirement, she enjoyed spending winters in Englewood, FL.
Sophia was a member of St. Mary Cathedral parish. She enjoyed playing Euchre, Cribbage and Bingo. She also enjoyed crocheting.
Sophia is survived by her children, Anne Marie (Stuart) Gingell of Lapeer, Ronald “Butch” (Sharon) Kwapis of Gaylord, Elaine Kwapis of Englewood, FL and Sandra (Ellis) Olson of Cheboygan; grandchildren, Dan (Jennifer) Gingell, Mike (Cecile) Gingell, Stuart (Gail) Gingell, Kristine (Theodore) Speerstra, Susan (Joseph) Ruby, Julia (Lorin) Randall and Deidra Budreau; great grandchildren, Elizabeth McAdams, Rachel Gingell, Hannah Gingell, Nicquel Gingell, Kaitlin Gingell, Taylor Gingell, Nicholas Speerstra, Kalli Speerstra, Kailee Bishop and Kiersten Bishop. Also surviving are sisters, Bertha Skeba of Lake Leelanau, Mary (Derald) Reynolds of Elmira, Pat Heaton of Elmira and Phyllis Lotscholtz of Elmira; brothers, Ray Osga of Tennessee, Jim (Mary Ruth) Osga of Frederic, Don (Carol) Osga of Dewitt, Ed (Ada) Osga of Elmira and Floyd (Pat) Osga of Gaylord.
In addition to her parents and her husbands, Sophia was preceded in death by sisters, Dorothy Brooks, Alice Duczkowski and Clara Pethers; a brother, Tom Osga and a granddaughter, Lee Ann Budreau.
Visitation at Gaylord Community Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 850 North Center Avenue will be held from 2:00-8:00 PM on Sunday, January 25, 2015. The St.Mary Altar Rosary Society will pray the Rosary on Sunday at 4:30 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, January 26, 2015 at St. Mary Cathedral, 606 N. Ohio St. Visitation at the church will begin on Monday at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow in the spring at St. Mary Cemetery.
