Shirley Ann Churches, 84 of Gaylord and formerly of Wolverine, passed away Saturday, June 4, 2016 at Tendercare Gaylord.
Born on March 11, 1932 in Jackson, Michigan, Shirley was the daughter of George and Myrtle (Briggs) Nichols. Raised in Pinckney, she attended Winans Lake School.
On July 23, 1955 Shirley married Donald H. Churches in Hamburg, MI. They were longtime residents of Pinckney before moving to Gaylord in 1992 and to Wolverine a few years later.
Shirley was a longtime delivery driver for the Detroit News in Livingston County and she worked for ten years in the dietary department and as a nurse aide at Whitmore Lake Convalescent Home. A natural care giver, she also cared for her mother for ten years and later for her mother-in-law.
She loved being a wife, mother and grandmother. She particularly enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. In her spare time she enjoyed crocheting, knitting, playing solitaire and word search puzzles.
Shirley is survived by Don, her husband of almost 61 years; her children, Gary (Donna) Churches of Vanderbilt, Donny (Karen) Churches of Unidlla, Glenda (Jim Cook) Churches of Ann Arbor and Julia (Gary) Micoff of Oklahoma; 11 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; sisters, Janet (Keith) Doty and Nancy Olsen both of Deckerville; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Dora Nichols and brothers, Hollis, Chuck, Jerry and Warren Nichols.
Shirley’s family will visit with friends from 4:00-8:00 PM Tuesday, June 7, 2016 at Gaylord Community Funeral Home & Cremation Service where funeral services will be held at 11:30 AM Wednesday, June 8, 2016. Interment will follow at Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Vanderbilt.
