Robert L. “Butch” Guthrie, 78 of Dickinson, ND and formerly of Gaylord, passed away Christmas Day, December 25, 2018 in Dickinson.
Born in Minot, ND on June 17, 1940, Butch was the son of Howard and Florence (Hendricks) Guthrie. Growing up, Butch was childhood friends with Arlene Hoppman. They were married in Surrey, ND on August 4, 1957.
Butch’s work in the oilfields took the family from North Dakota to Oklahoma City, OK in 1982 and to Gaylord in 1984. Prior to that he had worked in North Dakota delivering for Old Dutch Potato Chips and Pepsi.
In Gaylord he worked in the oilfields and then at Estelle Farms before going to work at Gaylord High School in the auto shop. He also worked for Otsego County Parks & Recreation.
Butch was an avid fan of World of Outlaw Sprint Car racing, having been a mechanic and a driver. He will also be remembered as an avid Minnesota Vikings fan. He enjoyed bowling in North Dakota and Gaylord as well as rabbit hunting and fishing.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Arlene, on October 4, 2015. Surviving are his children, Jerry (Diane) Guthrie of Gaylord, Kandy (Ernie Escontrias) Guthrie of Bismarck, ND, Kevin (Jo Carol) Guthrie of Dickinson, ND, Casey (Shelli) Guthrie of Kingsley, MI, Bill (Diane) Guthrie of Las Luz, NM and Stacy Guthrie of Gaylord; 14 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren; a brother, Buck Guthrie of Tempe, AZ and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Jean Grabow.
A memorial service will be held in Dickinson, North Dakota in June.
