Robert Joseph Matts, 82, passed away in the early morning hours of July 21, 2020 at Hiland Cottage. Robert, known as Bob, was the first son born to LeRoy and Rose (Damer) Matts on Dec 13, 1937 in Johannesburg, MI. The family moved to Boyne City in the early 1950’s where Bob lived the rest of his life, exactly the way he wanted.
He served his country stationed at Fort Knox in the US Army from 1961-1963. On July 13, 1963 he married Yvonne Hall. Bob retired from Wolverine Power Company but continued to work throughout his retirement; most recently for Charlevoix County at Boyne City Recycle Center where he enjoyed socializing with the regulars.
Bob had a strong work ethic and played even harder. From his days at the Petoskey Motor Speedway in the 50’s, the Elmira Race Track in the 70’s, the BC Shaker mud runs, Tractor Pulls, Four time champion of the Emmet County Fair Combine Demolition Derby, and his most recent adventure with his Rat Rod, Bob rarely sat still for long.
Bob is survived by his wife of 57 years, Yvonne; son, LeRoy; daughter, Lisa (Byron Anger); sisters, Phyllis Green, Patty Hart, Maryjane (Mark) Carson; brothers, Jerry & Jim; many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Donald and brother-in-law, Jim Green.
The family would like to give special thanks to the staff at Hiland Cottage for Bob’s care in his final days; neighbors, Jim Walker & Jo Bowman, Roger Cicotte & Amy Beardsley, and mom’s army of helpers for the continuous meals and support this past year.
At Bob’s request no service will be held. The family will hold a gathering at a later date. Those who wish are asked to consider memorial contributions to the Hiland Cottage in Petoskey.
