Michael was born January 17, 1945, and was adopted at 11 months old by Gyp and Jean Supernault of Lapeer, MI. Michael later attended Central Michigan University where he met the love of his life, Peggy Murphy.
Michael was passionate about all things science – and he was just as knowledgeable. A brief conversation with him would turn into an explanation of cloud formation or bird watching or astronomy. He was a lifelong educator, spending 35 years as a science teacher and as a naturalist at Lapeer’s Outdoor Education Center. His unorthodox teaching methods and his magnetic personality made everyone curious to learn more about natural science.
After they retired, he and Peg moved to Indian River where he continued his teaching ways. Michael was a board member for both the Burt Lake Preservation Association and the Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council.
He was an avid birdwatcher, a voracious reader and a huge Michigan fan. Everyone knew NOT to call Michael during a Michigan game or Science Friday on NPR. Last but not least, he was always appreciative of the delicious meals Peg whipped up for them.
Michael passed away at his home in Indian River on March 17, 2025. He is survived by his wife, Margaret (Peg!) of 58 years; his son, Jon and wife Melissa; in-laws, Jim Murphy of Hemlock, Mary and Dan Dymek of Bay City, Karen and Ken Keskitalo of Brighton, as well as many nieces, nephews and greats.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister-in-law, Jean Pfahlert, and his brother-in-law, Richard Murphy.
Memorial Services will be held at Transfiguration Church in Indian River on Saturday, March 29, 2025, with visitation at 9:00 AM, and service at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Burt Lake Preservation Association, Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council or Sturgeon for Tomorrow.
