Richard L. "Les" Schafer

Richard “Les” Irving Leslie Schafer passed away peacefully in his beloved Lewiston, Michigan, home on October 9, 2024, at the age of 84.

He was preceded in death by his parents Peter and Violet Schafer and his brother Allan Schafer and is survived by his son Richard Schafer, daughter-in-law Pamela Schafer, grandchildren Ryan Schafer (Maureen), Nicholas Schafer, and Lisa Sheldon (Trevor), great grandchildren Addison, Jameson and Everly, his brother Roy Schafer, sister-in-law Joyce Schafer and his cat Rusty.

Les was born February 12, 1940, in Chatham, Ontario, Canada. His family moved to Warren, Michigan, when he was a child where he was raised and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1959. He forged lasting friendships from his childhood including his best friend, Ronnie Muschong, who he continued to speak with every week throughout his life.

In the 60s, he drove a truck for Steve Brandt and Jerry Horgan Trucking, hauling materials used to build the I-75 freeway from Bay City to the Mackinac Bridge. From the 70s through the 90s, he drove for GM, moving parts from Saginaw to Detroit Assembly. Les retired in 2004 and moved to Lewiston, Michigan, where he spent his happiest years on the trails and enjoying time with his family.

He was a proud member of the FOP, Teamsters Local 247 and the UAW Local 659.

Les was a great cook and enjoyed feeding family and friends with his recipes. He owned Sandpebbles restaurant, on 16 mile and Harper, from 1972-1977, compiling a menu he would later sell with the business.

Les carefully curated a collection of classic cars, showcasing his impeccable taste. His passion extended beyond mere ownership as he actively participated in classic car events and shows, sharing his collection with others. His dedication to the preservation and maintenance of his cars ensured each vehicle remained in pristine condition, earning him hundreds of car show trophies through the years.

Whether it was through hilarious anecdotes, playful banter, or witty comebacks, Les’s great sense of humor effortlessly brightened any gathering and left a lasting impression. He will be dearly missed.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 15, 2024 from 3-6pm, with a Funeral Service being conducted at 5pm at Wujek-Calcaterra & Sons 36900 Schoenherr at Metro Parkway (16 Mile Rd).
