Raymond "Bud" Scott

Raymond D. Scott, 87 of Gaylord, died on Sunday evening, May 11, 2014 at McReynolds Hall.

Born on December 7, 1926 in Coleraine, MN, Ray was the son of Dayton and Emma (Schmidt) Scott.
Ten days after graduating from Coleraine High School, Ray joined the U.S. Army, serving during 1945-46. Following his military service he attended college at Itasca College and graduating from St. Cloud State College with a bachelor’s degree in biology.

On July 28, 1956 Ray married Helen Swedlund in Minneapolis. In 1966 they moved Kalamazoo, MI. Ray worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Kalamazoo for many years, and following his retirement he and Helen moved to Gaylord.
He was an avid hockey fan and in his youth was an accomplished hockey player. He was passionate about nature and the outdoors, enjoying fishing, hunting and bird watching. Ray also enjoyed woodworking and could often be found enjoying his favorite jellybeans. He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church and the Northland Sportsmen’s Club. Caring deeply about people, Ray was aware of his own blessings and gave his time and financial support to those who were less fortunate.

Ray is survived by Helen, his wife of over 57 years; his sons, John D. (Robin) Scott of Plainwell and William P. (Robin) Scott of Statesville, NC; grandchildren, Dayton (Crystal) Scott and Daniel (Anastasia) Scott; his great granddaughter, Natalie Scott and a brother-in-law, Harry (Dolly) Swedlund of Rochester, MN. Ray was preceded in death by a brother, 2 sisters and a daughter-in-law, Beth Scott.

Services for Ray will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, May 15, 2014 at Peace Lutheran Church, 3703 Old 27 South where the family will visit with friends beginning at 10:00 AM. Pastor Thomas Mammoser will officiate.

Those who wish are asked to consider memorial contributions in Ray’s memory to the Otsego County Food Pantry. Arrangements are by Gaylord Community Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 850 North Center Avenue.
