May Ames, 89 of Gaylord, passed away on Monday, April 13, 2015 at Bortz Health Care of Petoskey. Born on May 3, 1925 in Burnley, Lancashire, England, she was the daughter of Andrew and Doris Banham.
It was in England that May met a young U.S. Airman, Jack J. Ames. They married in England after World War II ended. May came to the United States with her new husband and they lived in Detroit and Flint before coming to Gaylord.
May was a member of St. Andrew Episcopal Church, and the ECW. She was a former Cub Scout den mother and was a volunteer with Boy Scouts. May enjoyed reading, crocheting and knitting. At the age of 50, she returned to college, attending North Central Michigan College.
On October 11, 2014, May was preceded in death by her husband, Jack. She is survived by her children, Marjorie (David) Lee of Naples, FL, Steve (Jackie) Ames of Gaylord, Greg (Mary) Ames of Phoenix, AZ, John (Linda) Ames of Las Cruces, NM, Ken (Laura) Ames of Gaylord, Cathy (Jim) Grenke of Gaylord and Susan (Ed) Lyk of Tampa, FL; 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren; sisters, Jean and Claire; and several nieces and nephews.
May was also preceded in death by a sister, Betty and a brother, David.
The family will visit with friends from 4:00-6:00 PM on Friday, April 17, 2015 at Gaylord Community Funeral Home & Cremation Service where services will follow at 6:00 PM.
