Matthew J Engel

Matthew J. Engel, 53 of Gaylord, died on Wednesday, November 19, 2014 at home. Born on September 13, 1961 in Royal Oak, Matt was the son of John M. Engel Sr. and Mae (Villneff) Engel.

A longtime resident of Gaylord, Matt worked as a bus driver for the Otsego County Bus System. He enjoyed the relationships he formed providing transportation to those in our community with special needs.

A talented writer, Matt enjoyed writing plays and had authored two books. He was also an area DJ and was involved with Gaylord Area Stage Company when it was founded several years ago. Matt enjoyed traveling to see stage plays and musicals downstate and in Toronto.

He was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles #1825 in Gaylord. Two years ago Matt was initiated into the Catholic Church and was an active parishioner at St. Mary Cathedral.

Matt was preceded in death by his father, John Michael Engel, Sr. Surviving are his mother, Mae L. Engel of Gaylord; his sister, Alice (George) Simmons of Gaylord; his brother, John M. Engel Jr. of Houston, TX; one niece and one nephew.

His family will visit with friends at Gaylord Community Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 850 North Center Avenue from 5:00-7:00 PM on Wednesday, December 3, 2014. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 AM on Thursday, December 4, 2014 at St. Mary Cathedral.
