Mary Genevieve Herbst

Mary Genevieve Herbst, 103, of Gaylord died Tuesday, November 20, 2012 at Aspen Ridge Retirement Village. Born on September 29, 1909 in Costello, PA, Mary was the daughter of Joseph and Antoinette (Turowski) Padzieski. On May 20, 1930 she married Irwin Herbst. She attended Detroit Business College and worked for years at Reeds Department Store. Mary was a longtime resident of Livonia. She was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church in Livonia for more than 70 years, where she headed the sewing guild. She was an excellent cook and seamstress and she enjoyed reading. She was an also an avid Detroit Red Wings hockey fan. On August 1, 1972 Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Irwin. She was also preceded in death by a son, Russell Herbst and several brothers and sisters. Surviving are daughters Gail (James) Castle of Gaylord and Mary (Larry) Gavigan of Tempe, AZ and a son, William (Sandi) Herbst of Wolverine. Also surviving are grandchildren Bradley (Sarah) Gavigan of Nashville, TN, Rebecca (Scott Schrantz) Gavigan of Chandler, AZ and Danielle (Rick) Girhiny of St Catherines, Ontario, Canada; one great grandchild, Augusta Gavigan and a sister, Genevieve Silka of Dearborn Heights. Friends may gather with the family on Monday, November 26, 2012 from 5:00-8:00pm at Gaylord Funeral & Cremation Service, 850 North Center Ave., where the St. Mary Altar Rosary Society will offer a Rosary at 5:00pm. A memorial mass will be held later at St. Michael Catholic Church, Livonia. Interment will be at Holy Sepulchre Catholic Cemetery, Southfield.
