Martin James Gutierrez, 22 of Indian River, passed away in Indian River on Wednesday, August 22, 2018.
Born in Saginaw on June 9, 1996, Martin is the son of Jose Gutierrez and Gail Phelan. He attended preschool in Wolverine before moving to Indian River in 2000.
A 2014 graduate of Inland Lakes High School, he played baseball in his junior and senior year and was also in marching band playing trombone and tuba. After high school, Martin attended Michigan Tech in Houghton and North Central Michigan College.
He worked for several years at Ken’s Village Market in Indian River where he worked as a bagger and also in the produce department. He had also worked in lawn care and later in construction at Indian River Custom Log Homes.
Martin was an avid woodworker who enjoyed making custom wood and acrylic ink pens, wood crosses for his church and other custom wood works. He also enjoyed gardening, skiing, tubing, kayaking and playing video games. He was a parishioner at National Shrine of Cross in the Woods in Indian River. Martin’s family and friends will remember his willingness to always help others in need.
Surviving is his mother, Gail Phelan of Indian River; his father, Jose Gutierrez of Saginaw; his sister, Loretta Gutierrez of Indian River his brother, Josh Maslowski of Saginaw; and his paternal grandmother, Sara Gutierrez of Saginaw. His large family and many friends will miss him greatly.
A funeral mass and celebration of Martin’s life will be held at 12:00 Noon Thursday, August 30, 2018 at National Shrine of Cross in the Woods in Indian River where the family will visit with friends beginning at 11:00 AM. Those who wish are asked to consider memorial contributions to the family.
