Marjorie E. Ahrenberg, a gentle spirit whose presence graced the world since January 2, 1932, in Detroit, Michigan, was called to her eternal rest on April 16, 2025, in Gaylord, Michigan. She departed this life unexpectedly, having fallen at her beloved Gaylord Methodist Church while lovingly delivering baked treats—a testament to her nurturing nature and the kindness woven into the very fabric of her being.
Marjorie's journey through life was marked by her unwavering commitment to family and community. A devoted mother, she dedicated countless years to raising her three sons, instilling in them values of generosity and compassion. Once her children were grown, she shared her administrative talents with the local school as a secretary, contributing to the education of the next generation with her genuine warmth and diligence.
Her life unfolded amidst the backdrop of significant historical events, including her tireless collection of bacon grease and tin during World War II, an act of unity and support for the war effort. The joys of her youth were spent traveling to Gaylord with family, where they cherished summers at Arbutus Beach. In 1960, she and her husband, Bill, built a log cabin, a place that would ever remain a sanctuary of memories and love.
In 1988, she transitioned from Wayne, Michigan, to Gaylord, where she fully embraced retirement. As a long-time member of the Gaylord Methodist Church, she actively engaged in various church activities and lent her talents to volunteering at the Otsego County Food Pantry, the RSVP program, and Relay for Life. Marjorie's dedication extended beyond her church; she served as a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts and was an active participant in the VA Auxiliary.
A graduate of Wayne High School in 1949 and an attendee of Cleary College for secretary training, her commitment to lifelong learning was evident. She was a voracious reader, a lover of jigsaw and crossword puzzles, and even into her nineties, she kept her spirit invigorated through walking and cross-country skiing.
Marjorie's interests were as varied as they were lively. She found great joy in sailing, particularly in the breathtaking waters of the British Virgin Islands with her devoted husband. Her knitting projects brought comfort and warmth not only to her but also to countless recipients of her heartfelt creations. She cherished the beauty of the outdoors, enjoying camping adventures.
Marjorie is lovingly remembered for her genuine, humble demeanor, her willingness to help those in need, and the soft-spoken kindness she shared with all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her legacy will endure through her cherished memories, woven into the hearts of those she loved dearly.
She is survived by her two sons, William (Bonnie) of Cheboygan and James (Beth) of Pinckney; two grandchildren, Nicole (John) Shineldecker and Joel (Christine) Ahrenberg; and four great-grandchildren, Lilly and Audrey Krupp and Hailey and Gavin Ahrenberg.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Chester and Edith (Gau-Sheldon) Smith; her husband, William Sr; two sons, Thomas and Jonathan Ahrenberg; and two brothers, Chester and Robert Smith.
Her family invites all who knew her to celebrate Marjorie's remarkable life, a memorial service will take place 11:00 AM Tuesday, April 22, 2025, at Gaylord Methodist Church, where the family will visit with friends beginning at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Gaylord Methodist Church, P.O. Box 617, Gaylord, MI 49734.
