Margaret Louise Pemberton, 94 of Harbor Springs and formerly of Alanson, passed away Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at Bay Bluffs in Harbor Springs.

Born on December 7, 1929, in Commerce Township, she was the daughter of Clifton and Gertie (Clark) Cox. She grew up in the Walled Lake area.

On October 7, 1946, Margaret was married to Joseph Pemberton in Livonia. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Alba, Michigan and eventually settled in Alanson, Michigan.

During their early life together, Margaret owned a restaurant in Alanson, while Joe owned a gas station next door. They sold both businesses in the early 1960’s to start another business, Hay Lake Marina on Hay Lake in Alanson. They operated the marina until the late 1970’s when they retired.

In retirement, Margaret and Joe enjoyed boating, traveling, and spending winters in Lake Okeechobee, Florida. Joe preceded Margaret in death on April 23, 1987. Margaret continued to travel to Florida, living for a time in Punta Gorda. In 2018 she moved back to Alanson.

Throughout her life, Margaret was an avid reader, and she enjoyed camping. Even in her last years, friends and family often referred to her as “feisty.”

She is survived by her children, LaVonne Brasseur of Pellston, Lisa Campbell of Bliss, Eric Pemberton and Joel Pemberton both of East Jordan, and Glen Pemberton of Oden; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Joe, she was preceded in death by a son, Albert Pemberton in 2014, a daughter, LeaAnn Howard in 2021, a grandson, Elijah Pemberton in 2019, and a granddaughter, Margaret May on September 3, 2024, the day before her own death.

In keeping with her wishes, Margaret’s family will remember her privately. Those who wish are asked to consider memorial contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association or the American Cancer Society.
