Obituary for Kenneth (John) Lee Sewell "Old Timer"
Kenneth (John) Lee Sewell, affectionately known as "Old Timer," passed away peacefully on October 16, 2024, at the age of 81. Born on November 9, 1942, to Charles and Matilda “Tilly” Sewell in Sparr, Michigan, Ken was the youngest of 15 siblings. He lived in Sparr all of these years sharing a beautiful life full of love, laughter, and devotion to family, faith, and community.
Ken’s life was blessed with not just one, but two great loves. With his first wife, Karen, Ken experienced the joy of raising a family and building a strong foundation rooted in shared values. They enjoyed many happy years together, creating a home filled with laughter and love. Ken and Karen shared a passion for the outdoors, working their farm, and raising their children. Whether it was quiet evenings at home, family gatherings, or tending to their farm, they created lasting memories together. Their love and the life they built together laid a strong foundation for the many family traditions that carried on with Vonnie after Karen's passing.
Later in life, Ken found another great love again with Yvonne, "Vonnie," who became his devoted partner and soulmate. Their love was pure and unwavering, filled with a deep connection that brought them both immense happiness. They loved exploring Michigan together, from quiet drives to Big Bear Lake to adventurous trips to the Upper Peninsula’s waterfalls. Whether picking up pizza or reminiscing about life’s blessings, Ken and Vonnie cherished every moment they spent together. His love for Vonnie was endless, and he adored her with all his heart.
Ken retired from Otsego County Road Commission after 33 years of hard work. Beyond his career, Ken was known for his big heart and his willingness to do anything for those he loved. He had a deep passion for horses, Western rodeos, and evenings spent around the campfire playing his guitar. He also played in a polka band and was an active member of his church’s worship team. Ken was happiest, tinkering in his barn or spending time on the farm, finding joy in life’s simple pleasures.
Ken’s love for his grandchildren was endless and deeply rooted in support and encouragement. He never missed a sporting event or activity, always there to cheer them on and be their biggest fan. His warmth and affection created an environment where his grandchildren felt cherished and valued. He took great joy in celebrating their accomplishments and supporting their dreams, instilling in them the importance of family, kindness, and perseverance. His jokes, one-liners, and signature farewell— “You behave, and don’t do anything I wouldn’t do”—will be cherished by all who knew him. Above all, his devotion to his family and his love for Vonnie defined his life.
Ken is survived by his loving wife, Yvonne Sewell, and his children: Ken (Cathy) Sewell of Gaylord, Alicia (Randy) Hesselink of Rudyard, John (Christina) Sewell of Gaylord, Dennis (Emily) Sewell of Johannesburg, and Bridget (Scott) Coffey of Rudyard. He was also a devoted stepfather to Ben Loetz of Louisville, Kentucky, and Renae (Eric) Bizzell of Cumming, Georgia. His legacy continues through his 19 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, whom he adored. and his grand dogs especially when he got to be with and babysit his Denver.
He is also survived by his sister Alice Griffith and a large extended family including brother- and sisters-in-law Stan and Fern Kwapis, Larry and Elaine Thompson, Keith Huff, Theresa Huff, Dale and Treva Immel, Wayne and Theresa Jarvie, and Helen Becker, as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends.
