Joyce E. Bur, 81 of Gaylord, passed away at home on Friday, June 24, 2016. Born in Cheboygan on January 19, 1935, Joyce was the daughter of Robert and Pearl (Hanson) Dettman.
Joyce was a graduate of Cheboygan Schools. She attended County Normal to become a teacher, and then taught school for several years in rural public schools and Catholic schools in and around Cheboygan.
On August 18, 1956, Joyce married Kenneth Bur in Cheboygan. After being drafted and going to basic training, Ken had orders to report to El Paso, TX. Joyce went with Ken to El Paso and worked in a local bank. Later she taught school in El Paso.
After his military service, Ken joined the Michigan State Police. He and Joyce moved to Wayland, MI where Ken was assigned and where Joyce taught in the Catholic school.
In 1966 Ken and Joyce moved to Gaylord where Ken was assigned. Joyce taught school for many years at St. Mary Catholic School.
They became active in the First United Methodist Church where Joyce was involved as an Acolyte coordinator and where she taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School. Joyce was a past worthy matron of the Order of Eastern Star. She was also an avid reader and she enjoyed crossword puzzles.
Joyce is survived by Ken, her husband of almost 60 years; a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Scott and the Rev. Amy Jo Bur of St. Peter, MN; a daughter-in-law, Lori Bur of West Bloomfield, MI; grandchildren, Austin, Victoria, Alex and Madeline; a sister, Sharon Eberhardt of Titusville, FL; a brother, Dr. Carleton (Gloria) Dettman of Grand Rapids, MI; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Ronald Dettman; and in 2014, by a son, Kevin Bur.
Joyce’s family will visit with friends from 3:00-7:00 PM Monday, June 27th at Gaylord Community Funeral Home & Cremation Service. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, June 28, 2016 at the Gaylord First United Methodist Church, followed by burial at Fairview Cemetery.
