James Peter Godlewski

James Peter Godlewski

James Peter Godlewski, 79 of Gaylord, passed away on Saturday, February 18, 2017 at McReynolds Hall.

Born on September 11, 1937 in Toledo, OH, Jim was the son of Walter F. and Julia M. (Nowak) Godlewski.  He moved to Erie, MI with his family when he was two years old.  Jim grew up in Erie and was a 1955 graduate of Monroe High School.

After serving in the U.S. Army National Guard, Jim was called to religious life.  Jim was a Salvatorian Brother for a number of years.

Jim also worked cooking in restaurants and over the years he lived and worked in eight states.  He also worked for his brother in his home improvement business for several years.

Jim had eventually returned to Erie and in 1999 he moved to Gaylord where he has lived since, in a home his father had built.

He was a parishioner at St. Mary Cathedral in Gaylord and St. Thomas Church in Elmira and he was a4th Degree member of Knights of Columbus.  Prayer was a part of his daily life and he often prayed for and helped others.

Jim was also an avid hunter and fisherman and he enjoyed cutting wood.

He is survived by sisters, SallyVogler of Temperance, Eugenia Hodnicki of Erie and Dianne (Dan) Gautz of Erie; his Goddaughters, Dawn Heer and Deborah Rhoades; as well as several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Walter D. Godlewski and a nephew, Stephen Godlewski.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday at St. Mary Cathedral in Gaylord where Jim’s family will visit with friends beginning at 10:00 AM.  Those who wish are asked to consider memorial contributions for masses at St. Mary Cathedral or to his family.
