Jack Gerald Nestell Sr, 77 of Indian River, MI passed away Sunday, December 27, 2020 at McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital.

He was born April 5, 1943 in Cheboygan, MI to Percy and Leola (Thomas) Nestell. At 9 months of age he was adopted by George and Edith (Ingalls) Nestell of Indian River, MI.

At the age of 17 years of age Jack left Indian River, MI and joined the U.S Navy in San Diego, CA where he served during the Vietnam War. Later Jack served several years in the U.S. Army National Guard in Michigan where he reached the rank of Sergeant.

Learning the trade of carpentry in his teens from his adoptive father, Jack spent several years as a carpenter in Cheboygan County following his naval service. He began driving semi-trucks in the late 1970s while in the National Guard and later as a commercial truck driver. He was a member of the Teamster’s Union and awarded the Safe Driver award while hauling hazmat materials ending his career of almost 35 years.

Jack was an avid nature lover and he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and bird watching. Likewise he enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was also an enthusiastic football fan.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, brother Ronald Nestell, sister Laura (Donald) Douglas, sister Esther (Raymond) Douglas, sister Giola Thomas and his son Jack Gerald Nestell Jr. who was his son from his marriage to Kathleen LaPeer of Afton, MI.  They were married on February 5, 1965.

Jack later married Emeline Clark of Brutus, MI on January 11, 1969.  They had three sons who survive; George Nestell, Jack Gerald Nestell III and wife Kathleen, and Chandler Nestell.  Jack’s grandchildren include Jeremy Nestell, Charles Nestell, Lindsey Nestell, Jacob Nestell, Madison Nestell, Korynn (James) Torpey, Issac Nestell, and Chadlee Nestell. Great grandchildren include Braelynn Nestell, Carley Nestell, and Wyatt Torpey.

Memorial Contributions can be made in Jack’s name to the Cheboygan County Humane Society.
