Gerald K. “Jerry” Atherholt, 76 of Levering, passed away on Monday, September 4, 2017 at Hiland Cottage in Petoskey.
He was the loving husband of Lisa M. (Marino) Atherholt. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Wilson Price and Eleanor F. (Brotko) Atherholt; and brothers, Edward and Raymond Atherholt.
Jerry grew up in Clawson, Michigan, was a 1958 graduate of University of Detroit High School and attended U of D College before entering the U.S. Naval Flight Program. He was a Navy Instructor Pilot, attack and fighter pilot, C130E Instructor Aircraft Commander with the Military Airlift Command on worldwide missions; Celestial Navigation qualified and did three tours in Vietnam. He had the opportunity to do extensive traveling all over the world while flying as pilot in command, gaining a wealth of knowledge. Jerry was offered the opportunity to become an Astronaut after going through Navy Pilot training alongside the original seven Mercury Astronauts. After 12 years of service and after being selected for Lt. Cmdr., he left the service to pursue his dream as a Northwest Orient Airline Pilot and later as a corporate pilot with Fortune 50 and 500 corporations.
Between flying, he also worked building roads and commercial buildings as a member of the Operating Engineers Local 324 for over 35 years before retiring. Jerry was also a realtor, licensed residential builder and he had a professional hazardous waste background.
In keeping with his wishes, following cremation burial will be at the Florida State National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those who wish are asked to consider memorial donations to the Cheboygan County Humane Society.
