Gerald Allen “Jerry” Carney, 77 of Gaylord, passed away at home on Thursday, December 8, 2016 with his family by his side.
Born in East Jordan on January 18, 1939, Jerry was the son of Clarence and Louise (Florenski) Carney. He was a 1957 graduate of East Jordan High School where he was a member of the National Honor Society.
On November 8, 1958, Jerry married the love of his life, Carol R. Johnson, in Boyne City. They lived for a time in East Jordan where Jerry worked at East Jordan Iron Works. Later they lived in Traverse City, Horton Bay and Atlanta, MI before moving to Dearborn Heights for many years where Jerry worked as a mechanical engineer in the auto industry. They also lived in Oxford and Saginaw, MI and Bedford, IN. After retiring, Jerry and Carol spent the summer months in Gaylord and wintered in Avon Park, FL.
Jerry was a former member of the Moose Lodge. He was an avid fisherman and golfer and he enjoyed playing pool. A lifelong musician, he played guitar, piano, banjo and accordion. Jerry had played in bands in his younger years and enjoyed recording his own music throughout his life.
Surviving are Carol, his wife of 58 years; three sons, Gerald C. “Jay” (Amanda) Carney of Gaylord, Kevin F. (Asimina) Carney of Clearwater, FL and Michael A. Carney of Westland; grandchildren, Jessie, Angela, Robert and Lily; great grandchildren, Landen and Addisyn and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Charles Carney and a sister, Patricia Whittaker.
A gathering to remember Jerry will be held from 1-5 PM Sunday, December 18, 2016 at the home of his son Jay, at 430 Murner Road in Gaylord.. Those who wish are asked to consider memorial contributions to the charity of your choice.
