Frances S. Walters

Frances S. Walters, 88 of Gaylord and formerly of Lewiston and St. Clair Shores, passed away on Friday, April 21, 2017 at Tendercare Gaylord.

Born in Lafayette, Indiana on August 7, 1928, Frances was the daughter of Oscar R. and Ruth M. (Merchant) Strain.  After graduating from high school in Lafayette, Frances attended Purdue University where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree.

After teaching for a time in Indiana, she moved to St. Clair Shores where she taught home economics for many years at Lakeshore High School.  She later received her master’s degree from Wayne State University.  She retired from teaching in 1991.  In 2014 she moved from St. Clair Shores to Lewiston, then to Gaylord in 2015.

Frances was an active member of Lakeshore Presbyterian Church in St. Clair Shores.  She was an avid reader and enjoyed volunteering at the St. Clair Shores Public Library.  She was also a member of the American Association of University Women and the Hearing Loss Association.

Frances is survived by her children, Paula (Mike) Szameitat of Lewiston, Ruthelen (Jim) Gorney of Walker and David (Kathy) Walters of Sterling Heights; her former husband Paul (Pat) Walters of Fruitport; grandchildren, Eric, Peter, Amanda, Desiree, Paxton, Jim and Kristin; five great grandchildren; and her brother, Elbert Strain of Lafayette, IN.  Frances was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Shirley Strain.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, May 5, 2017 at Lakeshore Presbyterian Church 27801 Jefferson Avenue, St. Clair Shores, MI  48081 where a luncheon will follow the service.  Interment will be at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens Cemetery in West Lafayette, IN.  Those who wish are asked to consider memorial contributions to Lakeshore Presbyterian Church.
