Ethel Blanz

Ethel May (Skidmore) Blanz, 84 of Petoskey, passed away on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 at American House in Petoskey.

Born on November 17, 1934 on Newark, Ohio, she was the daughter of Raymond Leon and Elton Elizabeth (Shoemaker) Skidmore.  After graduating high school, Ethel went on to attend Ohio State University, from where she received her  bachelor’s degree.  She received her master’s degree from the University of Alabama.

On February 7, 1959 Ethel was united in marriage to Robert C. Blanz.  They were married for 37 years and remained dear friends until his death in 2011.

Because of Bob’s work as President and CEO of Mountain Bell, the family had lived in many locations around the United States.  Eventually they settled in Colorado where she enjoyed being a part of Mountain Bell and the many organizations for which she volunteered.  Later they retired to Petoskey.  Ethel enjoyed living in Petoskey, where she enjoyed taking care of their Bay View Cottage prior to its sale in 2014.  She also enjoyed restoring antiques, being part of the book club and most importantly, raising her five daughters, who were her pride and joy.

Surviving are her five daughters, Susanna J. Blanz, Elizabeth Alford, Jeane Blanz, Sarah (Madden) Blanz and Laura (Steve) Belmear; four grandchildren; and a sister, Susan (David) Hilleary.  She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert; and a sister, Norma Smalley.

In keeping with Ethel’s wishes, her family will remember her privately.

Arrangements are by Gaylord Community Funeral Home & Cremation Service.  Please share your memories and personal messages with the family at www.gaylordfuneralhome.com
