Obituary for Eloyse L. Spencer
Eloyse L. Spencer, 90 of Gaylord, died at home at Aspen Ridge Retirement Village on Monday, March 17, 2014. Born in the Carolinas on September 28, 1923, she was raised with two brothers on a cotton farm. As her “daddy’s little girl” she was kept from some of the hard farm work her brothers did every day. At a time when few women and even fewer women of color were able, she served her country honorably in the United States Army Women’s Air Corp during World War II. Eloyse served from August 16, 1943 until February 9, 1946. Later, she worked for the State of Illinois. She moved to Gaylord from Chicago several years ago and had lived at Aspen Ridge Retirement Village since 2007. Eloyse is survived by those who cared for her, including her Aspen Ridge family. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 22, 2014 at Gaylord Community Funeral Home, 850 North Center Avenue with the Rev. Pam Lynch officiating. Military honors will be provided by Ralph Holewinski VFW Post 1518. Interment will be at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, MI.
