Ellsworth D. “Al” Shankleton, 82 of Wolverine, passed away on Monday, November 30, 2015 at Hiland Cottage in Petoskey.
Born in Dundee, MI on November 4, 1933, he was the son of Ellsworth and Rhea (Spaulding) Shankleton.
Al proudly served in the United States Army while being stationed in Germany. In 1967, Al and his wife, Marjorie moved their family to Wolverine and have resided there ever since. Al and his brothers, Don and Bob owned and operated Shankleton Brother Logging Company for many years in Northern Michigan. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed hunting and trapping. He had a great sense of humor and always had a good story to tell. He was the ‘king of firewood’ and was meticulous about having a straight firewood pile. He was a devoted family man and loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He will be missed.
He is survived by his children, David Shankleton, Mike Shankleton both of Monroe, Linda (Greg) Nisley of Gaylord, Denise (Jeff) Shankleton and Sheila Bartel both of Wolverine; step children, Juin (Dan) Barnier of Dundee, Tom Skinner of Afton and Greg Skinner of Gaylord; brothers, Donald (Miriam) Shankleton of Wolverine, Robert (Lillian) Shankleton of Jones, Chip (Donna) Shankleton of Wolverine; a sister, Myrna Shankleton of Traverse City; many loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie in 2004; his parents; a brother, Gary and a sister, Judy.
A Celebration of Life Service will take place at 1:00 PM Saturday, December 5, 2015 at Wolverine Free Methodist Church.
Those who wish are asked to consider memorial contributions to Wolverine Free Methodist Church.
