Dorothy M. Sumerau, 87 of Gaylord, passed away Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at McReynolds Hall.
Born on March 31, 1931 in Colorado Springs, CO, she was the daughter of James and Margaret (Mitchell) Morrison.
Dorothy married Alvin Sumerau in Colorado and with their young family they moved to Arizona. Years later, Dorothy moved to Gaylord where she had lived for more than 20 years.
Dorothy had watched and spent time with her grandchildren during her younger years in Gaylord. She was a bird lover and enjoyed feeding the birds around her home. Also an avid reader, Dorothy especially enjoyed history and family genealogy. A very generous woman, she enjoyed supporting numerous charities.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin Sumerau; a daughter, Amber Lisa Westcott and brothers, Phil, Matthew and Daniel Coates. She is survived by two children, Wanda (David) Jensen and Allen Sumerau, both of Utah; a son-in-law, Kevin Westcott of Gaylord; a close friend and “adopted daughter”, Susan Hellenberg of Gaylord; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; and her sister, Sue Toler of Indiana.
Arrangements for a celebration of her life are pending and will be held at a later date. Those who wish are asked to consider memorial contributions in her name to Otsego Wildlife Legacy Society.
