Donald Parker Fuson

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Donald Parker Fuson who passed away peacefully on March 10th, 2025, in Petoskey, Michigan.

Don was born on December 6th, 1955, in Akron, Ohio. His family moved to Gaylord, Michigan, where he graduated from high school in 1974. He spent his life and career in Michigan, dedicated to his profession in lumber and manufacturing for over 30 years as a skilled salesman, known for his charismatic tenacity, persistence, and charm.

A true lover of the outdoors, Don’s life was defined by his passion for fly fishing, hunting, boating, and collecting. He spent many enjoyable days on the water, especially the Au Sable River of northern Michigan, casting a line in search of a prized catch, always cherishing the beauty and tranquility of nature. He was known for his ability to tie the perfect fly, identify different fish species, and had an extensive knowledge of Michigan’s best fishing and hunting locations. He loved exploring and taking a drive through the back roads of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan with his friends and family.

Don was a proud and active member of many outdoor and sportsman organizations, some including the Northland Sportsmen's Club of Gaylord and Michigan chapters of Trout Unlimited and the Sierra Club. He received his carpentry certificate from Mid Michigan College and enjoyed woodworking as another of his many hobbies. He performed meticulous research and spent countless hours curating his impressive sportsman collections.

Don was also a lifelong lover of rock music, he had great enjoyment in learning, playing, and collecting guitars. Listening to live music brought him joy and he had a particular fondness for Fleetwood Mac and The Rolling Stones. He was a true sports enthusiast and longtime fan of the Lions and Red Wings and could often be found cheering (yelling) them on, whether on TV or enjoying a game in person. His knowledge of the games was legendary.

Before settling into retirement, Don began a new adventure, finding passion in the culinary arts. He left behind a legacy of delicious meals and warm memories as chef and manager of Cooper’s Pub and Grill of Charlevoix, Michigan and then enjoyed a leisurely paced life, working at Treetops Resort of Gaylord, Michigan. He was known for making the most wonderful breakfast and insisted everything tasted best from a cast iron pan.

Don is survived by his daughter, Rachael (Drew) Potter, his son, Chad (Georgeta) Fuson, and his two grandchildren, Will and Ileana Fuson. He is also survived by his brother Dennis (Judy) Fuson, sister Cheryl Fuson Hardin, nephew Chris (Heather) Hardin, niece Sarah (Gabe) Sipes, and nephew Benjamin (Megan) Fuson. Don is preceded in death by his parents, William “Parker” Fuson and Elsie “Marie” Fuson.

Don also leaves behind many other loved ones, extended family, community members, and friends who had an impact on his life, including his lifelong friend and fellow collector of almost 50 years, Jack “Double J” (Karen) Jaynes.

Don will be remembered forever for his relentless hunt for treasures at the antique store, his fondness of dark chocolate, loving to ‘wine and dine’, and his truly epic mustache. We will cherish his special surprises, ability to coin and dole out perfectly fitting nicknames to his favorite people, his infectious laugh, his big heart, and his unwavering sense of humor. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

In following his wishes, all family, friends, and loved ones are encouraged to raise a glass and toast to their favorite memories of Don. A private celebration of life will be planned and details shared at a later date.

To honor Don’s love of the outdoors and encourage future generations, we ask that any memorial donations be made to an outdoor nature conservation or related youth programming of your choice.
