Don Szalay, a resident of Mancelona, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loved ones on July 3, 2023, at the age of 71.
Don was born on March 11, 1952, in Wayne, Michigan to Joseph and Almeda (Chase) Szalay. Don grew up in Plymouth, Michigan, where he graduated from high school and was known for his sharp (and fast) muscle cars. The family made their way west to Salem Township where he worked with his father at their family businesses.
Don was well known in the Salem area for his outstanding mechanical abilities on automotive and large, heavy equipment. He had a heart of gold and was always willing to help a friend in need.
In 2009, Don’s friend set him up with a blind date. That blind date led to a wedding and relocation into “God’s Country”, northern Michigan, with his soul-mate, Gloria. There the two made a comfortable life together, adding several “fur-babies” to their loving home. Don will be sadly missed all who had the fortunate opportunity to know and love him.
Don is survived by his loving wife, Gloria; son, Daniel M.; sister, Linda Chase; sisters-in-law, Patty (Bill) Hicks, Sherry (the late Doug) Arnett; as well as many nieces, nephews and dear friends.
Don was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Almeda Szalay, and brother-in-law Doug (Sherry) Arnett.
