Diane Marie Mundt

Diane Marie Mundt, 80 of Gaylord, passed away at home on Friday, March 21, 2025.

Born on June 29, 1944, in Detroit, Diane was the daughter of Harry and Jean (Miller) Westmore. Diane grew up in Oak Park and attended parochial school until the eighth grade. She enjoyed a very close and loving relationship with her grandparents, with whom she had lunch every day. She later attended Ferndale High School and pursued further education at Ferris State and then at Oakland University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in English.

Diane met her soulmate, Walter Mundt, through a mutual friend in October of 1965, after which they enjoyed a whirlwind courtship. They were married at Guardian Angels Church in Clawson on February 12, 1966. Their first home was on Custer in Royal Oak, where they welcomed four children. After ten years, they moved to Troy, where they spent twenty years. Both Diane and Walter had a passionate interest in golf, which led them to move to Gaylord in 1994. There, they built a home on the 5th hole at Michaywe, and enjoyed gatherings among a wonderful community of friends.

Diane worked as a preschool teacher in a church in Troy for a few years. She later served as a medical transcriptionist and office manager at Sportopedics in Royal Oak. After moving to Michaywe, Diane worked for several years as a member of the communications department for the Diocese of Gaylord before retiring. She was also a parishioner at St. Mary Cathedral in Gaylord.

After retiring, Diane enjoyed her volunteer work with the Otsego Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She played bridge and golf in her spare time, often with her Michaywe friends. She traveled with friends and family, visiting Italy and China, and a number of U.S. National Parks. She loved her many pets, who were always named after Disney characters. Diane found tremendous joy in any activity that allowed her to spend time with her grandchildren, and took great pleasure in an ongoing tradition of celebrating her birthday in new places in northern Michigan. Over 50 members of her family and friends joined her in celebrating her 80th birthday at Picano’s, where they indulged in great Italian food, Diane’s favorite.

Diane is preceded in death by her husband, Walter, her parents, Harry and Jean Westmore, a brother, Brian Westmore, and a grandson, Devon Mundt.

Diane is survived by her children, Danielle Mundt of Gaylord, Stacey (Noah Hebner) Mundt of Warren, Rebekah (Ted) Stremmell of Royal Oak, and Michael (Gayle) Mundt of Tavares, FL; grandchildren, Samantha (Ben) Viviano of Buckley, and Brock Stremmell of Royal Oak; a sister, Catherine (Duane) Joyce of Clawson; a brother, Lawrence (Rena’) Westmore of Clawson; a sister-in-law, Camille Westmore of Auburn Hills; several nieces and nephews; and her animal companions: Elsa, Anna, and Tommy.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 2:00 PM Friday, April 11, 2025, at St. Mary Cathedral, where the family will visit with friends beginning at 1:00 PM.
