Desiree Amber Checks, born July 9, 1978 in Gaylord, MI departed this life to be welcomed into her saviors arms exactly where she would want to be surrounded by her husband, children, and loved ones on December 4, 2021.
Desi was 43 when she passed and fought one of the most courageous and painful battles with multiple myeloma. Desi fought her cancer with unmatched strength, dignity, and courage right up to her last breath. She is now out of pain and watching over her prized possessions which were undoubtedly her family, with that same vigor.
Desi spent a great deal of her life serving others and finding joy in making someone smile. She was treasured by her co-workers at the Gaylord Intermediate School District, where she brought joy to numerous children working as a “lunch lady”, a job she loved and longed to return to. Desi was great at baking and would make some of the best sweets and treats for her beloved family and friends. She was the one you turned to if you wanted a crochet blanket for your new baby. She had a green thumb and was so proud to own a piece of property where she could gather her friends and family to put on an annual pumpkin party. She was great at gardening and canning, always collecting great seeds to spread to the next year. Desi was witty, full of spunk, and has made some nurses’ day with her ability to surprise with a laugh at some of her most difficult moments.
She is survived by her hero and husband, Frank Checks; her reason for living, sons Mason and Connor; parents Mary and Chris Weaver of Interlochen, MI, father Thomas (Bob) Hebel and partner Mary of West Branch, MI; brother Thomas (Bob) Hebel and wife Crista of Interlochen, MI, sister Mara Brigham of Grayling, MI, brother Braden and Megan Hebel of Murfreesboro, TN, sister Emily Weaver of Eagle River, Alaska, brother Benjamin and Brenna Hebel of Ashland, Missouri, brother Bowen and Allison Hebel of Frankfort, MI, sister Jacinda and Ben Franke of Interlochen, MI, and sister Chrissa Weaver of Grawn, MI. She is also survived by an army of nieces and nephews who knew she was the best Aunt.
We are going to celebrate a life well lived on Friday, December 10, 2021 at Gaylord Community Funeral Home & Cremation Service. Family will be spending time with her at 9:00 am and welcoming friends at 10:00 am. Funeral services will begin at 12:00 noon with a luncheon to follow.
