David Eugene "Potsey" Potter, 75 of Johannesburg, passed away Tuesday, March 2, 2016 at McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey. He was born on August 3, 1940 in Durand, Michigan, to John and Helen (Helmer) Potter.
David and Shirley (Wiegandt) were married in St. Charles, Michigan, on September 3, 1973 and celebrated their 42nd wedding anniversary in 2015. For their 40th anniversary they took a cruise throughout Alaska.
David and Shirley made their home on the Wiegandt farm outside of Johannesburg, Michigan, these past 20 years hosting an annual Applefest for family and friends. He was also active with the Johannesburg 4th of July Committee.
Prior to that, they called St. Charles their home where David previously ran a Gamble’s hardware store and where he and Shirley spent many years planning the annual St. Charles’ haunted house.
David was retired after working for Detroit Ball Bearing and Applied Technologies for 30 years. David attended high school in Owosso where he played full back on the varsity football team before graduating in 1959. David served in the U. S. Navy and had attended Saginaw Valley State University.
David’s family includes his wife, Shirley, children, Barbara (Chuck) Potter Holland of Durand, Dennis Potter of Gaylord, Amy (Cleveland) Copenhaver of Gaylord and Brian (Heather) Cleveland of Johannesburg; grandchildren, Luke and Chase Copenhaver, Reid Cleveland and Amanda and Andrew Lamphere; nieces Carla Shiels, Carmen Parker, Heidi (Matt) Joint and Dawn Pisto and nephew William Wiegandt III. He also leaves behind many beloved cousins and special friends.
The family will visit with friends from 2:00-8:00 PM Friday, March 4, 2016 at Gaylord Community Funeral Home & Cremation Service where funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, March 5, 2016. Burial will take place in the Mount Hope Cemetery in Johannesburg in the spring.
