Daniel Thomas Kinney, Danny, Dan, Son of Walter Dunn and Lorraine Mary Rose Kinney was born January 22, 1953 in Sault Ste. Marie, MI. He attended Catholic Schools in The Soo: St. Mary’s Elementary and was a graduate of Loretto Catholic Central High School.
Dan worked on the great Lakes Freighters for several seasons as a deck hand and, most notably, was three boats behind the Edmund Fitzgerald on Lake Superior when she sank. They were watching the Fitzgerald on radar to see when it cleared White Fish Point so they could hide behind the point from the big waves too. The Fitzgerald just disappeared from the radar screen.
Dan never married. He lived in Clarkston, MI for 20 years with his mother, Lorraine, after his father died. They were involved in making and selling jewelry, hats and candy. He loved rebuilding cars and trucks and riding his motorcycles. He wanted to be buried on his motorcycle, but he’ll understand, settling for the “gas tank” necessitated by space. He loved boating and fishing and had a wonderful sense of humor. He loved collectibles, nourished by growing up and working in the memorabilia filled Antlers Bar and Grill which was owned by his father, Walter Kinney Sr. and his Uncle Harold.
Dan departed this life from heart failure after receiving last rites and surrounded by family and friends holding his hands, kissing him goodbye and singing to him as nurses and doctors removed his life support equipment. Dan was preceded in death by his Father, Walter Sr., his Mother, Lorraine and his Brother, Walter Jr. He will be missed.
Dan is survived by Bridget (Kinney) Lundy of Toledo, Carol (Kinney) McClellan of Frankenmuth, Tim Kinney and wife Jill of Clarkston and Kathy Kinney of Clarkston, many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and numerous wonderful friends.
