Craig D. Blom DVM

Craig D. Blom, DVM, 65 of Levering, passed away at home on Friday, July 5, 2024.

Craig was born in Royal Oak, Michigan on July 11, 1958, to Hubert and Roberta (Child) Blom.

After graduating from Kimball High School in Royal Oak, Craig went on to Michigan State University where he received his undergraduate degree before entering the MSU College of Veterinary Medicine, graduating in 1983.

Craig and his young family settled in Allegan, where he joined Allegan Veterinary Clinic, and later became a partner. He was proud of his career, always striving to be a leader in his field. He was particularly well known for his skills with canine ACL repair surgery and was often sought by his clients and other colleagues for this procedure. His gentle and deeply caring nature created friendships both with the animals and their owners. He was a celebrated member of the Allegan Community. After retiring from Allegan Veterinary Clinic, Craig moved to Levering to his retirement log home. In retirement, he worked part time as a relief Veterinarian at Maple River Veterinary Clinic in Alanson.

Craig had a love for animals, hunting and fishing, woodworking, golf and playing cribbage. At bird hunting camp he had the nickname “Eagle Eye.” In his youth, he was also an accomplished baseball player, scouted by professional baseball teams. In his retirement, he spent countless hours working on his cabin, fulfilling a lifelong dream to move up north, live in a cabin with a wraparound porch, surrounded by peaceful woods and wildlife. Craig also enjoyed flying RC airplanes with his son Joshua and was at one time a member of Gun Lake Prop Busters. His kids will always remember Friday night Sci-Fi and homemade pizza night, trips to Cedar Point and Six Flags amusement parks, Renaissance Fairs, rollerblading trips at Littlejohn Lake while he metal detected, weekend trips to the family cabin, and skiing at Bittersweet. Craig’s greatest pride were his children and grandchildren, he showed his love and care through Father’s Day weekend fishing trips, fixing all the little animals brought home or found in the yard, and care packages from home that included his homemade bread and fudge.

Craig is survived by his children, Morgan (Hal) Wyrick, Jaime (Nick) Prafke and Joshua (Amanda) Blom; grandchildren, Finnley, Oliver and Clayton Blom; his sister, Julia Blom; his former wife, Jacquelyn Blom Thompson; aunt and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hubert “Bert” and Roberta Blom.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, July 20, 2024, at Gaylord Community Funeral Home & Cremation Service where visitation will begin at 10:00 AM. Interment at Fairview Cemetery will follow.

A service will also be held at Allegan United Methodist Church for those who do not wish to travel north. Service to be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 27, 2024, followed by coffee and dessert.

Those who wish are asked to consider memorial contributions in Craig’s memory to the charity, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
