Claudia M. Purkey

Claudia Marie Purkey, 78 of Gaylord, passed away Tuesday, December 12, 2023, at Medilodge of Gaylord.

Born in Superior, Wisconsin on February 2, 1945, she was the daughter of Walter and Elizabeth Marie (Finckler) Corbin.  After graduating from high school in Superior, she attended the University of Wisconsin-Superior where she received her bachelor’s degree in education.

Having a desire to serve her country, after graduating from college she joined the United States Navy, serving in Beeville, Texas.  There she met her future husband, fellow Naval officer, Thomas H. Purkey.  They were married in Claudia’s hometown of Superior on October 30, 1971.

After leaving the Navy, Tom’s work took them to many parts of the country for several years.  In the early 1990’s they settled in Gaylord where Claudia was a busy stay at home mom raising two boys. 

The family became active members at the Gaylord E-Free Church.  Claudia also enjoyed baking bread, crocheting, gardening, music and singing.

She is survived by Tom, her husband of 52 years; her two sons, Eric Purkey of Gaylord, and Luke (Nicole) Purkey of Iron River, MI; a sister, Katie Johnson, and a brother, John Corbin, both of Superior, WI; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, December 18, 2023, at the Gaylord E-Free Church where visitation will begin at 10:00 AM.  Those who wish are asked to consider memorial contributions to Gaylord E-Free Church.
