GySgt Charles Ocie Gilbert, USMC retired, 77 of Atlanta, passed away Tuesday, January 26, 2021 at Munson Healthcare Otsego Memorial Hospital.

Born Charles William Gaines on December 26, 1943 in Buffalo, NY, he was the son of William and Jeanette Gaines.  His name was later changed when he was adopted by his step father.

In 1964 Charles enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, beginning a 20 year career of honorable service to his country.  This included a one year period of service in Vietnam.  A rifleman and pistol sharp shooter, he was a dedicated and decorated Marine who loved serving his country.  He retired on August 29, 1984 with the rank of Gunnery Sergeant.

In retirement he loved watching and collecting movies and spending time taking care of his beloved dogs.

He is survived by his daughter, Trudi (Herb) Ferro and their children, Quinn Sigsby, Aléna Sigsby and Blake Ferro; his son, Charles W. (Kristine) Gilbert and their children, Cody Gilbert, Richard VanAlstine, Gaige Gilbert, Skylar Gilbert, Darrin Richards, Gabe Richards and Riley Zdral.

Also surviving are brothers, Richard Gaines, Ocie Gilbert and Robert (Betty) Gilbert; a sister, Nancy Penley and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Randy Gilbert and Larry Showers.

A private family service will be held at Gaylord Community Funeral Home & Cremation Service followed by burial with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery.
