Carl W. Smith, 73 of Vanderbilt, known to many as “Flash”, passed away on Thursday, September 21, 2017 at McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey.

Born in Caraway, Arkansas on April 8, 1944, Carl was the son of Floyd and Edith (Patterson) Smith.

Carl was a longtime truck driver.  He worked for over 30 years for Beckman and later Gulfmart in the oil industry.

His passion was building and working on race cars and driving at area race tracks.  He could often be found working on his many projects in his garage.  He was also an avid hunter and fisherman, and he enjoyed playing golf.

Carl was preceded in death by his wife, Joe Ann on December 23, 2016.  Surviving are his children, David Smith, Carl (Kim) Smith Jr, Tina (Buddy) Holt, Kevin (Anna) Smith and Michael (Mary) Smith all of Howell, Tresha Smith Poirier of Vanderbilt, Robert Holmes of Waters and Linda (Steve) Schmidt of Neshkoro, WI; a sister, Mary Smith of Gaylord; a sister-in-law, Debbie Smith of Vanderbilt; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, in laws and other extended family and friends.  He was also preceded in death by a son, Gary Lynn; a daughter, Kristana Lee; a sister, Ina “Jo” Churches; and brothers, Bill (Joyce), Ralph, James and Leon Smith

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon, Tuesday, September 26, 2017 at Gaylord Community Funeral Home & Cremation Service where the family will visit with friends on Tuesday beginning at 10:00 AM.  Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Vanderbilt.  Those who wish are asked to consider memorial contributions to the family or to the charity of your choice.
