Bernard A. Beaver, 75 of Gaylord, passed away at home on Friday, November 13, 2015. Born July 6, 1940 in Flint, Bernie was the son of Charles “Les” and Mildred Beaver.
Bernie grew up in River Rouge and graduated from River Rouge High School. He served in the U.S. Army in Korea from 1963-1965, where he was a cryptographer.
He worked for a time at Great Lakes Steel. Bernie’s family owned property on Otsego Lake in Gaylord where they spent summers for several years. He has made Gaylord his home since the mid-1960’s. Bernie worked for 37years at Standard Products as an oiler, retiring in 2002. He was involved with the union negotiating contracts. In his youth he worked for a time at Snow Valley. He also worked over the years in maintenance for Lake Arrowhead, maintaining the roads, grounds and swimming pool.
Bernie enjoyed playing golf, hunting and snowshoeing. He loved classic cars, especially his ’69 Thunderbird. Since retiring, Bernie and Kathy have enjoyed spending winters in Crossville, TN.
Bernie is survived by his wife, Kathleen. They were married on November 23, 1979 in Gaylord. Also surviving are two stepchildren, Charles denHeeton of Mt. Pleasant and Keri Lynne denHeeton of Austin, TX; a grandchild, Jaymis denHeeton-Mick; sisters, Bernice, Beverly, Gloria, Gerri and Barbara; brothers, Alfred “Sonny” and Gary; and several nieces and nephews. Bernie was preceded in death by a sister, Bertene Peters.
In keeping with his wishes, Bernie’s family will remember him privately. Those who wish are asked to consider memorial contributions to Hospice of Michigan.
