E. Arthur “Art” Woodhouse, 84 of Gaylord, passed away at Aspen Ridge Retirement Village on Tuesday, March 15, 2016.

Born in Detroit, Art was the son of Ernest and Honor (Sullivan) Woodhouse. Art was a longtime teacher, principal, football coach and superintendent of schools in the Warren Consolidated School District before taking the position of superintendent of schools in Sitka, Alaska, retiring in 1990.

After retiring, Art and his wife, Millie, returned to Michigan. They enjoyed traveling and eventually settled in Gaylord. Art enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing softball, which he did well into his 70”s.

Art is survived by his wife, Millie, whom he married on January 3, 1981. Also surviving are his children; Dan (Sue) Woodhouse of Ft. Myers, FL, Mike (Colleen) Woodhouse of Sterling Heights, Brian (Claudia) Woodhouse and Bob (Mary) Woodhouse of Gaylord, and Ellen Woodhouse of Greenwich, NY; his step sons, John (Connie) Chowning of Grand Blanc and Steve (Debbie) Chowning of Land O’ Lakes, FL; 21 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren with a one on the way; and several nieces and nephews. Art was preceded in death by sons, Tim and Keith Woodhouse; his parents; and a sister, Joann.

Art’s family will remember him at a gathering to be held later in the Warren area. Those who wish are asked to consider memorial contributions in his memory to Hospice of Michigan.
